A Providence Police Sergeant saved an individual from jumping off the Henderson Bridge — and now his commanding officer is recommending that he be considered for an award for his live-saving work in the line of duty

On Saturday January 30, Providence Sgt. Steve Courville was part of the team that responded to a call into police that someone was on the Henderson Bridge holding a knife to their throat, threatening to cut themselves — and jump.

“We had one other brush with that person before.  We’d gotten a call a week before, he was found in his car,” said Providence Lt. Joe Donnelly. “A week later, we got the call he was on the bridge, he had a knife — he said he didn’t want anyone to approach him."

“Sgt. Courville was able to get him to throw the knife, and secondly, talk him down,” said Donnelly.  “Usually we have department negotiators that would be called in, but I don’t think there were any available at that time.”

“I think what Sgt. Courville did was worthy of commendation,” said Lt. Donnelly. “The director supervisor writes a letter of commendation to the city to begin that process, which I am doing. And the American Legion, we’ll alert them.  When an officer saves a life, we let them know.”

Courville on Record

“A woman called to say there was a man on the [Henderson] bridge threatening to jump,” said Sgt. Courville of what transpired on Saturday. “East Providence [police] responded as did Providence."

“A man wearing a blue sweatshirt was holding a large knife to his neck, and he kept saying don't come closer, he was afraid I was going to taser him,” said Sgt. Courville. “I got him talking, he said he was having problems at home.  I said I know you're hurting, but you don't want to hurt yourself.  You don’t want to jump in that water.”

“I said I'm Steven, we’re not going to hurt you, just come down from the bridge," said Sgt. Courville. "I got him to drop the knife, then I got him to come down from the edge. I hugged him when he came off that bridge.”
