Rally for Black Major in Providence Police Department at City Hall Today

A rally in support of appointing a Black Major to the Providence police department will take place at Providence City Hall at 2 P.M. on Monday, November 2.

Led in part by community activists Kobi Dennis and NAACP Providence Branch President Jim Vincent, the effort has been in the works for weeks to bring light to the issue at this event.

"Like the crime numbers, we need to deal with this perception, which dovetails for the police to reflect the look of the community," Vincent told GoLocal in September. "When the community sees that there's more trust, the police can solve more crime."

"I've been saying this all along, so we've been working on this.  There's precedent for a Mayor to appoint a major.  Both [former Mayors] Cianci and Cicilline appointed two black majors. Moreover, it's important in terms of recruitment. People need to see there's upward mobility," said Vincent. "They look it as a career, and want to see a career ladder -- and not just be a patrol officer for 20 years."

Statement by Organizers

“The “Peaceful Rally” will focus on the appointment of a Black Providence Police Major, effective immediately within the ranks of the Providence Police Department.

The unrest in our country between law enforcement and the Black community is quickly becoming an epidemic. The appointment of a Black Police Major from the Honorable Major Jorge Elorza has been formally requested by several community leaders during a planned meeting during the summer months.

The Black Major Movement has very little to do with race and more to do with fair policing in urban communities. The lack of Black leadership in the city of Providence has been over-looked for decades. The time for change is now!

The “Peaceful Rally” for all people begins Monday November 2, 2015 at 2 pm and will conclude at 5 pm. Providence City Hall, 25 Dorrance Street Providence, RI 02903 (outdoors).

"The Black Major Movement is about change within the hierarchy of Law enforcement, Judicial and the Education System in Providence. Tomorrow's "Peaceful Rally" will focus on the decision made by Mayor Jorge Elorza to deny the community a chance at starting to break a vicious cycle that has plagued our city for decades, "Diversity" within leadership positions," said Dennis. "The Providence Police Department is proud to announce their efforts to diversify the police force during recruitment efforts. The Community is still wondering when exactly will those recruits don a "White" shirt or will they continue to be "Black" listed throughout their career?"
