Rhode Island Ranked 39th in the U.S. for Women's Equality

Rhode Island has been ranked as the 39th in the country for women's equality, according to a new study done by WalletHub.

According to the study, Rhode Island ranks 23 in workplace environment, 48 in education and 30 in political empowerment.

"Women’s rights in the U.S. have made leaps and bounds since the passage of the 19th Amendment. Yet many women still struggle to crack the proverbial glass ceiling. Feminist or not, any American can easily discern the disgracefully wide gender gap in 21st-century America. In 2015, the U.S. failed to make the top 10 or even the top 20 of the World Economic Forum’s ranking of the most gender-equal countries — currently in 28th position and falling eight places behind several developing nations since 2014," said WalletHub.

The Method

To determine the gender based disparities in the US, WalletHub compared the 50 states across three key dimensions including workplace environment, education and political empowerment.

They evaluated the categories using 15 metrics. Each metric was graded on a 100 point scale, with 100 representing complete gender equality. They compared the differences between women and men for all metrics.

WalletHub then calculated overall scores for each state using the weighted average across all metrics, which was then used to build the final rankings.
