What Needs to Be Done to Improve Rhode Island's Business Climate?

RI ranks 50th in CNBC
This week, Rhode Island was ranked #50 for business climate in the country by CNBC.

Not near the bottom. Dead last.

"I am disappointed in the rankings, since there has been some progress in making Rhode Island "open for business" for existing and new businesses. Our ranking could easily improve. Two things have to happen," said URI Distinguished Professor of Business Edward Mazze.

"First, Rhode Island businesses have to begin to celebrate and promote their successes and become more active in changing their elected officials," said Mazze. "And second, elected officials have to understand that they have done a terrible job in listening to business concerns on issues such as taxes, regulations and energy and health costs and making real legislative changes so that the 95,000 microenterprises and small businesses in Rhode Island will be able to grow, create jobs and succeed."

So what needs to be done?

This isn't a new question. In 2013, the Rhode Island Senate made a point of tackling the issue of poor business rankings.  In a piece entitled, "Why Business Rankings Matter," GoLocal reported:

A recent press release from the RI State Senate office touts 28 bills passed this past session that are designed to "move the needle" -- an effort designed to improve Rhode Island's business rankings.

The legislative initiative, when announced in January, was designed to "move the needle" and improve Rhode Island's rankings and de facto the business environment and the economy.

Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed, who was behind the 2013 to improve the states rankings, was unavailable for comment on the latest ranking on Wednesday.

Revisiting the Question

Two years after the State Senate-driven initiative, Rhode Island did little to move forward.  GoLocal asked, "What are the big ideas to fix Rhode Island's economy?" in March 2015.

Two months after that, Rhode Island made a jump of three spots -- and out of the bottom ten -- in CEO Magazine's Business annual business rankings, and unemployment fell over 2% during the previous year.

Things were looking up. "What Will Fix Rhode Island's Business Climate?" GoLocal asked leaders in May 2015.

Now, Rhode Island is faced with pulling itself out of last place -- and here's what people had to say.
