The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is warning travelers that it will close one of the two westbound lanes on Westminster Street at the Route 6/10 interchange in Providence.

According to RIDOT, the change is needed to continue the replacement of structurally deficient Westminster Street Bridge.

The lane will be closed on Monday, February 24.

Lane Closure

This change includes a restriction for large trucks, which will be prohibited from making a left turn on the off-ramp from Route 10 North to Westminster Street.

Instead, trucks will follow a detour by turning right onto Westminster Street, left onto Tobey Street and left onto Broadway to reach Olneyville Square.

According to RIDOT, this traffic pattern will be in place for approximately one year.

Once complete, RIDOT expects to shift all traffic onto this new portion of the bridge so it can begin the replacement of the southern half.

According to RIDOT, the original traffic pattern with two lanes in both directions of Westminster Street is expected to be restored in approximately two years, when RIDOT completes the reconstruction of this bridge.
