Skeffington: Raimondo Asked for Confidentiality Agreement in New Negotiations

Jim Skeffington
Pawtucket Red Sox owner Jim Skeffington said on Thursday he couldn't discuss details of negotiations with Governor Raimondo for a new stadium to be built in Providence  -- but acknowledged that the first proposal by the ownership group had been off the mark.

"Governor Raimondo has asked us for a confidentiality agreement," Skeffington told the crowd of roughly thirty-five attendees at the Mt. Hope Community Center, in one of a number of meet-and-greet sessions scheduled between the new ownership group and Providence residents.

With catered food -- and free tee-shirts and bags on hand emblazoned with the "Baseball RI" logo -- Skeffington told attendees that he realized the initial effort presented to Rhode Islanders fell flat.

"We rolled out a program that obviously isn't working," said Skeffington of the owners' pitch to have the state subsidize an $85 million stadium with $120 million over 30 years, that Raimondo had called "not fair" following a presentation by owners and consultants to the Commerce Corporation on Monday April 27.

Skeffington did state to the audience at the Mt. Hope Community Center that the owners are still seeking state support in current negotiations.

"There will be public support," said Skeffington, who offered no other details regarding the status of discussions, in light of the confidentiality agreement.

"It could be three weeks, or three months," said Skeffington.

Jobs, Training, Taxes Broached

Skeffington offered new details on Thursday for the owners' vision for the 195 land.

"We want a micro-brewery," said Skeffington of his vision for the stadium.

The crowd asked for more information about jobs, community involvement, and charitable involvement by the owners.

"I'm planning on building a charitable foundation to help kids," said Skeffington. "San Miguel [School} is one we like a lot."

An audience member expressed concern that any new deal would happen without public input to follow, saying that after a new agreement is reached, "It [will] be too late then for public input."

"I'm sure there will be hearings, I'll be going around to talk with as many people as possible," said Skeffington.
