The Cranston Police Department announced the arrest of a suspect accused of attempting to enter a home unlawfully and stabbing the homeowner.

At approximately 12:06 PM on Tuesday, multiple officers responded to Aldrich Avenue following a 911 call, reporting a stabbing in progress. Upon arrival, officers found Devan Tallo, 32, of no permanent address, being restrained by two men with a large butcher knife nearby, said Cranston Police.

Police said they discovered a male victim on the ground with apparent stab wounds to his neck and abdomen; witnesses stated they saw Tallo attacking the victim. When officers attempted to handcuff Tallo, he resisted, requiring a taser deployment before he was taken into custody.

The victim was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and is in stable condition. Tallo was also taken to the hospital for treatment of a hand laceration.

According to police, a preliminary investigation indicates that Tallo attempted to enter the victim’s home while the victim and his daughter were inside. Afterward, he was seen rummaging through the trash behind the residence, collecting aluminum cans. When the victim confronted Tallo, a verbal exchange ensued, continuing as they walked along Aldrich Avenue. Tallo then allegedly produced a large butcher knife and stabbed the victim four times. Two nearby workers overheard the altercation, witnessed the stabbing, and immediately intervened—disarming and restraining Tallo until police arrived.

Once released from the hospital, Tallo will be charged with:

• Felony Assault with a Dangerous Weapon

• Attempted Breaking and Entering

• Commission of a Crime of Violence While in Possession of a Knife Over 3”

• Resisting Arrest

Additionally, Tallo will face court proceedings for violating bail conditions from a 2020 felony assault case and probation for a 2023 simple assault on a police officer.

Colonel Michael Winquist, in a press release, commended the two men who intervened, stating, “While we do not encourage bystanders to put themselves in harm’s way, their quick and selfless actions undoubtedly saved the victim’s life. Their bravery is commendable.”
