Charges Filed Against Couple Involved in Cranston Police Shooting - City Refuses to Release Video

Rhode Island State Police announced that two days ago, police in Massachusetts arrested Michael Campagna, age 24, of South Boston, Massachusetts, and Megan O'Brien, age 24, of Lynn, Massachusetts, relating to a shoplifting incident and a Cranston Police shooting. 

Both individuals were arrested at JFK train station in Boston, Massachusetts, as fugitives wanted in Rhode Island on various charges relating to an incident where a Cranston Police Officer discharged their firearm.  

The Cranston Police officer's pursuit was sparked by a reported shoplifting at the Garden City Shopping Center on Sunday.

Allegedly, both Campagna and O’Brien fled in a gray Kia. 

According to Cranston Police, shortly after fleeing, “an Officer observed the suspect gray Kia stopped in traffic on Reservoir Avenue near the onramp to Route 10 in the City of Providence. When the Cranston officer approached the suspect gray Kia, opened the driver's door, and ordered the operator, identified as Campagna to exit the vehicle, he sped away running over the officer’s foot. The Cranston Police officer then discharged her service weapon."   

Cranston Police have refused to release body camera footage of the incident.

Previously, Cranston Police have released body camera footage within 24 to 48 hours of members of the public or elected officials.

 

Once extradited to Rhode Island, Campagna and O’Brien will face the following charges:

Campagna for the following: 1.) Felony Assault and/or Battery, 2.) Assault on a Police Officer, 3.) Reckless Driving / Eluding Officer, 4.) Obstruction of an Officer in Execution of Duty, 5.) Resisting Arrest, and 6.) Conspiracy.

O'Brien for the following: 1.) Felony Assault and/or Battery, 2.) Assault on a Police Officer, 3.) Aiding and Abetting (Assault on a Police Officer), 4.) Aiding and Abetting (Reckless Driving/ Eluding), and 5.) Conspiracy.

In addition to the above-referenced charges, the Cranston Police Department holds active arrest warrants for Megan O’Brien for felony shoplifting and Michael Campagna for misdemeanor shoplifting.
