Anti-Toll Coalition Forming PAC to Challenge Legislators Who Vote for RhodeWorks

The StopTollsRI coalition announced Tuesday that it is "taking initial steps to form a PAC to challenge lawmakers who vote yes on the toll bill."

With votes expected this week, StopTollsRI said it is "serious about building a war-chest to take on legislators who vote yes for tolls."

"StopsTollsRI, through their partner organization The Gaspee Project, has taken initial steps to form a PAC to fund candidates who will run against pro-toll politicians. With Rhode Islanders speaking out against tolls, yes votes on toll legislation represents a direct violation of the will of the people," said the coalition in a release.

Statement on PAC

The announcement comes on the heels of a press conference Tuesday morning at the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce where the state's top elected and union officials turned out in support of the passage of RhodeWorks legislation this week.

StopTollsRI.com released the statement following the press conference:

The StopTollsRI coalition has already raised thousands of dollars to educate the public on the perils of tolls and for independent expenditures against the politicians who vote for them. As a result of the StopTollsRI campaign so far, nearly 4,000 individual lobbying email communications against tolls have been sent to lawmakers. The formation of a PAC is the next step in this multifaceted campaign.

Citizens are encouraged to donate to the StopTollsRI coalition here. The StopTolls coalition has requested that lawmakers take a position on tolls. Representative responses can be found here and Senator responses can be found here. The coalition also encourages Rhode Islanders to call and email their legislators immediately before the committee votes are taken. Pro-toll lawmakers do so at risk of seeing anti-toll candidates in the primary and the general election.

In the recent Senate 11 race, the StopTollsRI coalition scored a major victory as the no tolls candidate was elected in an upset to predictions made before the race. This unexpected outcome sent a clear message to lawmakers. The formation of a StopTollsRI PAC will ensure that similar outcomes are seen across the state.

StopTollsRI.com is a coalition of citizen groups opposing not just the Governor’s Truck-Toll plan, but any toll propopsal.
