Campaign 2022 is in Full Swing NOW! – “The Sunday Political Brunch” – July 11, 2021

“Trump Internet Lawsuit” – Former President Donald Trump has sued Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other social media sites for blocking him. He claims censorship. But as the Washington Post analysis point out, “The First Amendment protects people from censorship by the U.S. government, not from content moderation decisions by private companies, no matter how large or influential. Courts have consistently thrown out cases like Trump’s in the past,” according to a forthcoming report on research by Santa Clara University law professor Eric Goldman.

“What Says Trump?” – “I announced that I am SUING Facebook, Twitter, and Google for unconstitutionally censoring ME and other conservatives around the Nation.
My team is demanding an end to the shadow banning, a stop to the silencing, a stop to the blacklisting, vanishing, and canceling. We will not rest until we’ve achieved a MAJOR VICTORY for the American People. This will be an uphill battle, Patriot, and I cannot do it alone. I need YOU to stand with me and FIGHT BACK.” The email, of course, ends with a pitch for donations.
“Here’s My ‘Layman Lawyer’ Analysis” – These internet companies are private companies. They have the right to publish, or not publish anyone they want. I can write a “Letter to the Editor” of my local newspaper, but it has no legal obligation to publish it. You just hope they have the good sense to provide a variety of opinions. I consider what Facebook and Twitter have done to Trump as, “soft censorship,” but nothing illegal or unconstitutional. I would not ban him (and have advocated that Twitter and Facebook should not many times in this column). But I respect the rights of private businesses to have self-governance.
“The Trump Pressure Valve” – As I have written here for weeks, the Trump team has been bombarding me to join his new social media platform. The only catch is that I must join and pay for the service. Let me say for the umpteenth time, I HAVE NEVER PAID FOR POLITCAL CONTENT, FROM EITHER PARTY, NOR WILL I EVER! Done!
“Pelosi Begging” – Both sides of the aisle are literally begging for cash. “I hate to reach out like this – but I just learned national Republicans outspent national Democratic HQ by $14 million to retake power. I have never needed your help more than I do at this moment. Will you rush $1 to defend our House Majority? I am in complete disbelief. FIRST: Trump teased another run for President if Republicans take back the House. THEN: Republicans sprang into action -- and just OUTSPENT us by $14 MILLION to win.”
“Scalise Begging” – Not to be outdone, here is the GOP appeal. “Democrats are reaching new voters. They are growing their donor files. And they're opening field offices in swing districts. Believe me, I don’t like asking you for money... But this is a nationwide effort to defeat our America first allies. I may not like it but if that's what it takes to win, I won't hold anything back. I know how much you've done to help our movement -- now the stakes are higher than they've ever been before, so I'm asking for a little more. I'm hoping you'll pitch in EIGHT dollars to defend our top GOP allies in each of these targeted states. Without 100% participation, I'm afraid we'll lose them all.”
“In Sum???” – Call me crazy, but don’t these pitches sound pathetic and needy? Look, I realize Nancy Pelosi and Steve Scalise did not write these. These are mass emails I get from internet bots, but it’s just shameless. But it is also instructive. It tells you both sides of the aisle know how vulnerable the margins are in 2022. Right now, either party could win full control of Congress, or we could have a split Congress. So much of the Biden agenda will rest on the outcome.
“The Pitch from Mitch!” – Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also wrote me this week: “It DOESN’T End! I just wanted to check in because I feel like I haven’t heard from you lately, Friend. Unfortunately, my update for you isn't good news. Democrats are preparing to spend RECORD AMOUNTS of money to further EXPAND their Senate Majority, and, Friend, we can’t afford to let that happen. We need this nation’s TOP CONSERVATIVES to rush in EMERGENCY REINFORCEMENTS if we’re going to prevent it. Schumer has already threatened to abolish the filibuster and pack the courts to rubberstamp Biden's liberal agenda.” The email then asks for regular donations between $15 and $250 dollars!
“Why Are They Targeting Me?” As a journalist, it is unethical for me to make any political donations, so I never have. Do you regularly contribute to any political party or cause? Why, or why not? Just click the comment button and let us know!
