Her campaign has blasted out emails to potential donors, “Please join us on Monday, March 22nd at 6 PM for a Zoom conversation with Nirva as she explores the 2022 race for Mayor of Providence!"

If she runs, she would face announced candidates Brett Smiley -- former Director of Administration for Raimondo -- and Gonzalo Cuervo, former top staffer to Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea.

The field may have a bastion of potential candidates — those who have voiced interest in running including Providence City Council President Sabina Matos, term-limited council members John Igliozzi and David Salvatore.

Matos is also a candidate for Lt. Governor after Dan McKee was elevated to the Governor’s office after Gina Raimondo was confirmed as U.S. Secretary of Commerce under President Joe Biden.

Smiley Troubles

Smiley also from the East Side of Providence has been under fire for improper fundraising activities.

Smiley returned thousands of dollars in campaign donations from executives of companies that were receiving state contracts while Smiley was RI’s director of administration.

In February, the Rhode Island Republican Party filed a complaint with the Rhode Island Ethics Commission regarding Brett Smiley, Governor Gina Raimondo’s Director of Administration.

"Mr. Smiley is getting ready to resign to focus on the next chapter of his public service career. We believe that the next chapter in Smiley’s career shouldn’t begin until a sweeping investigation by the Ethics Commission into his unethical pay-to-play fundraising is conducted," said Rhode Island Republican Party Chairwoman Sue Cienki.

And Smiley in an email today wrote, "My reputation for hard work, integrity, and the ability to get things done has resulted in a groundswell of early support. You’ll no doubt be hearing more from me in the months to come."
