House GOP Caucus Removes Morgan as Minority Leader Following Trillo Endorsement, Morgan Fires Back

Patricia Morgan
The House Republican Caucus voted to remove Representative Patricia Morgan as House Minority Leader, effective immediately.

The move came hours after Morgan endorsed Republican-turned-independent Joe Trillo for Governor on Thursday.

The announcement of Morgan's removal came from Rep. Blake Filippi, who was a member of the GOP caucus as an independent.

"On October 4, 2018, the House Republican Caucus voted to remove Representative Patricia Morgan as House Minority Leader, effective immediately. The Minority Leader post will remain vacant until after the 2018 General Election," said Filippi in the statement, but he refused to answer follow up questions.

Morgan fired back.

"I was surprised because [Rep. Filippi] -- who sent it out -- served as an independent," said Morgan. "So I think it's ironic. I think people of good will can have differing opinions. This is censuring me for a different opinion. Look, Joe Trillo served longer as a Republican than Allan Fung has been a Republican"

"I was only going to be leader for 30 more days," said Morgan. "As I look at Joe, he's the one that has the common sense and solutions that will turn Rhode Island around. I think he's the only one with the path to beat Gina Raimondo."

Morgan Endorses Trillo

As GoLocalProv reported, Trillo announced that he is being endorsed by Morgan.

"It is truly with great pleasure and honor that Patricia and I can once again join forces with the one mission of helping Rhode Islanders. This election presents a chance for real change and hope for all those who have felt lost and disenfranchised by the current administration,” said Trillo.

The move comes as a major shakeup in the race, with the election less than five weeks away.

Taking Morgan's Team

At the press conference, Trillo announced he has the support of former GOP gubernatorial candidates Ken Block and John Robitaille and former Attorney General Arlene Violet, who Morgan had assembled to be on her team during the Republican primary.
