VIDEO: GOP's Morgan Endorses Trillo for RI Governor

Joe Trillo, Independent candidate for Governor
Independent candidate for Governor of Rhode Island Joe Trillo announced Thursday that he is being endorsed by Republican House Minority Leader -- and former Republican gubernatorial candidate -- Patricia Morgan.

The move comes as a major shakeup in the race, with the election less than five weeks away.

Cranston Mayor Allan Fung won the GOP primary in September with 56.4% of the vote to Morgan's 40.1%.

The announcement Thursday was made at Trillo headquarters in Warwick, after he alerted the press to a "major announcement" taking place.

"It is truly with great pleasure and honor that Patricia and I can once again join forces with the one mission of helping Rhode Islanders," said Trillo. "This election presents a chance for real change and hope for all those who have felt lost and disenfranchised by the current administration."

New Dynamic in Race

Following Fung's victory in the Republican primary, GOP State Representative Bobby Nardolillo appeared on GoLocal LIVE, urging the party to come together -- including Morgan -- to stave off a threat from former Republican Trillo, who served at the honorary chair of President Donald Trump's campaign in Rhode Island.

"We see Joe as someone who has been with the Republican party for a long time," said Nardolillo. "[Trillo] saw an opportunity, instead of going through the process."

"He was the Trump guy. He was the big Republican out there," said Nardolillo. "We see him as an opportunist instead of moving the state forward."

Taking Morgan's Team

At the press conference, Trillo announced he has the support of former GOP gubernatorial candidates Ken Block and John Robitaille and former Attorney General Arlene Violet, who Morgan had assembled to be on her team during the Republican primary.
