Senator Morgan, Lt. Gov. McKee Oppose National Grid Rate Hike

Senator Morgan opposes National Grid's rate hike
Senator Elaine Morgan and Lieutenant Governor Dan McKee both came out in opposition to National Grid’s 19 percent rate hike for electric services.

National Grid has yet to schedule a hearing on the proposals, which would go into effect on October 1 and raise the average customer’s bill to $18.97.

“We need to do something about this. Enough is enough! Rhode Islanders already pay some of the highest rates in the country,” said Morgan. In addition to attending the hearings and working with the commission to deny this request, I intend to ask Senate leadership what sort of initiatives we can take to prevent these kinds of outrageous increases. The average Rhode Islander simply cannot sustain escalating power bills.”

Morgan is encouraging ratepayers to contact their representatives to protest the rate increase.

McKee released the following statement:

“Another rate increase is unacceptable. It is unacceptable for hardworking Rhode Island families, our small business community and our state’s seniors and most vulnerable.

I am calling on National Grid to use millions of dollars in tax windfall from the reduction in the federal corporate tax to lower the standard offer and give Rhode Island electric consumers the rate relief they deserve.

Since January, I have been demanding that National Grid use its tax windfall to lower energy costs. Due in part to the efforts of my office, the Grid reduced proposed electric rates by $26 million, but the company has failed to promptly return millions of additional tax windfall dollars to consumers. The Grid began receiving tax relief on January 1. The rate relief that the Grid provides to Rhode Islanders should be retroactive to January 1. So far, this has not been the case. National Grid has an opportunity to do the right thing and I urge them to take it.”
