Hopkins Secures Victory in Cranston After Post-Election Vote Count by Board of Elections

Ken Hopkins
Ken Hopkins has secured the votes to become Cranston's next Mayor, following a Rhode Island Board of Elections count of over 9,000 Cranston votes on Wednesday.

After the BOE tabulated over 9,000 votes that were unable to be counted on Tuesday due to machine problems, Hopkins succeeded in maintaining his lead over Democratic opponent Maria Bucci.

Hopkins ended up with 21,098 votes to Bucci's 17,551.

Bucci had remained hopeful earlier in the day to the BOE's vote count.

The Bucci campaign had released the following statement on Wednesday:

With the polls closed and the votes tallied from Tuesday and most of the mail ballots reported, the Cranston Mayor’s race is still too close to call.

Over 9,000 early in-person votes and additional mail, provisional and manual ballots are yet to be counted. The Board of Elections is scheduled to count early in-person ballots sometime on Wednesday afternoon. The Cranston Board of Canvassers will be reviewing provisional ballots at City Hall beginning at their meeting scheduled for 12pm.

“It is so important to make sure that every single vote is counted,” said Maria Bucci. “We remain hopeful for a positive outcome.”
