NEW: RI GOP Calls for "No Curveballs" from Speaker on Stadium

The Rhode Island Republican Party is calling for "no curveballs" from House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello on a Providence stadium for the Pawtucket Red Sox, after they said that Mattiello called for any subsidies to be "revenue neutral."

RI GOP Chair Brandon Bell said, "Revenue neutral will mean the PawSox owners are guaranteed millions in taxpayer subsidies to build a new ballpark, and taxpayers will have to hope that the ballpark will generate enough tax revenues someday to equal the millions they spent."

"The Speaker may be able to trick two ladies from Garden City with this nonsense about 'revenue neutral' but most taxpayers will not get fooled again," continued Bell. "How many times have Rhode Islanders heard there is a budget deficit because the General Assembly's forecasts for tax revenues were too rosy?  Have we forgotten that the R.I. Convention Center Authority was going to eventually pay for itself and not cost the taxpayers a dime?"

Bell concluded,"Worcester and New Bedford public officials were smart enough to figure out that the building of a new ballpark with taxpayer subsidies makes no economic sense.  It is time Rhode Island public officials followed the lead of these communities and just say no to taxpayer subsidies for a new ballpark.  Enough with the curveballs."
