NEW: Senate Votes to Call Witnesses in Trump Impeachment Trial - Whitehouse Wants McCarthy Deposed

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse
United States Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) on Friday called for the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump to be suspended in order to depose House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

GOP leader McCarthy and Trump reportedly got into an expletive-laden argument on a phone call as the January 6 Capitol riot was still unfolding, three sources briefed on the matter told NBC News on Friday.

"McCarthy placed the call to Trump, according to a source familiar with the matter," reported NBC.  "Trump told McCarthy on the call, 'Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are,' according to Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Wash., and another Republican member familiar with the conversation."

On Saturday, the United States Senate was poised to voted on other to impeach Trump or not, after the House vote to impeach.

In a turn of events, the Senate voted to call witnesses -- further protracting the trial.

The Senate voted 55-45 in favor of calling witnesses  after three days of presentations from House Democrats and Trump's defense team. Five Republicans voted with Democrats to call witnesses.

Witnesses were not called in Trump's first impeachment trial -- but Republicans held the Senate majority at that time.

Lead House impeachment manager, Rep. Jamie Raskin, had announced Saturday morning that his team was seeking testimony from Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-Wash.) to talk about her knowledge of a conversation between House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Trump during the Capitol attack on January 6.
