Spicer and Flynn - The Two Most Influential Rhode Islanders in America

Who could predict that oh-so-politically blue Rhode Island would produce two of the most influential inner-circle staffers to President-elect Donald Trump?

Now, two Rhode Islanders — Michael Flynn and Sean Spicer — from Middletown and Barrington, respectively, are soon to be in a tiny group of influential Presidential advisors who will sit directly next the offices of the President and Vice President.

Flynn, who comes from a huge Democratic, Irish Catholic family and was educated at URI, is the President’s National Security Advisor.

Previous National Security Advisors include Henry Kissinger, Colin Powell, and another Rhode Islander, Tom Donilon. The job is immense -- it is responsible for coordinating defense, foreign affairs, international economic policy, and intelligence.

Similarly, newly appointed Spicer will serve as the White House press secretary. An always complicated job, it is now made even more so serving President Trump in a country so politically divided, it will make the post far more complicated and demanding.

Spicer, a Barrington guy, attended Portsmouth Abbey and as GoLocal reported, his first job was for United States Senate Democratic leader George Mitchell of Maine in Washington.

The two are among the best, smartest, and most driven Rhode Island has produced. Both with Democratic roots and a commitment to service and government have the tremendous opportunity to help protect and improve America for all.
