Joe Trillo refutes Raimondo's claim RI cooperates with ICE
Independent candidate for Rhode Island Governor Joe Trillo blasted Governor Gina Raimondo's claim that the state fully cooperates with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), at a press conference at the Rhode Island Department of Corrections.

"Right now, as of 2017, RIDOC personnel are not allowed to assist ICE in the apprehension of an illegal immigrant as they are released from state prison," said Trillo. "We are living in a sanctuary state. Regardless of what the Governor says on the debate stage, the truth is that the government and State Police will do everything they possibly can to avoid cooperating with immigration laws."

Trillo provided a copy of the inter-office memorandum from 2017, which states, "Consistent with our policy on ICE detainers, the Department and our staff must follow these guidelines: Upon the discharge of an Immigration Detainee, Correctional Officers have no legal authority to assist in the apprehension or detention of individuals sought by ICE."

"When I am Governor I will give ICE and any other federal agency for that matter my full cooperation," said Trillo. "We can no longer afford the image of a sanctuary state, it is killing our economy and our appearance to the rest of the country.
