5 Takeaways From the Patriots 19-17 Preseason Win Over Carolina

The New England Patriots defeated the Carolina Panthers 19-17 in their third preseason game on Friday night in Carolina. The Patriots are now 3-0 in preseason play for the first time since 2003.

"I thought our guys competed well tonight. I was proud of the way we came down here, prepared for the game. I thought we had a good week of preparation, kind of being the first week that we have done it like this without practicing against the team we played against," said Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick after the game.

New England will play their final preseason game next Thursday against the Giants.

The Game

New England had a 3-0 lead after the first quarter with Tom Brady having just taken over after Jimmy Garoppolo got the start.

In the second quarter, Brady connected with Chris Hogan for a 33 yard touchdown pass to give New England a 9-0 lead after a failed 2-point conversion. Hogan led the team with 5 receptions.

The Patriots took their 9-0 lead into the third quarter when the Panthers got on the board with a field goal after the Patriots defense kept Cam Newton's offense out of the end zone.

Third string quarterback Jacoby Brissett took over half way through the third quarter  and drove the Patriots down the field, connecting with DeAndre Carter on a 12 yard touchdown pass to give the Patriots a commanding 16-3 lead.

In the fourth, the Patriots led 19-3 after a Stephen Gostkowski field goal before the Panthers got it going late.

Carolina's third string quarterback Joe Webb hit Marcus Lucas on two separate occasions to lead Carolina to 14 straight points and bring them within two, 19-17, with 27 seconds to play.

The Panthers attempted an onside kick, however, kicker Graham Ganoe kicked the ball out of bounds ending the game.

Tom Brady

The story coming into the  game was Tom Brady and his play time and when/if it would come.

Brady came into the game at the very end of the first quarter and extending his stay deep into the second quarter.

Brady went 3 of 9 for 76 yards and a touchdown pass in 4 series of action.

Garoppolo Struggles

On the flip side of the coin, Jimmy Garoppolo struggled in his dress rehearsal game.

"There were ups and downs, little things here and there that we need to get corrected and we will take care of it," said Garoppolo after the game.

Garoppolo went 9 of 15 for 57 yards, took an intentional grounding penalty, nearly turned the ball over on a fumble (James White recovered it) and a miscommunication with Julian Edelman nearly led to an interception.

Garoppolo played the first quarter, the final two minutes of the first half and about half of the third quarter before turning it over to Jacoby Brissett.
