URI Edges Fordham 68-65, Start 2-0 in A-10 Play

With the game tied at 64, URI's E.C. Matthews drove to the basket and converted a layup to put URI in front 66-64 with 1:52 left in the game. That Matthews field goald turned out to be the last field goal made by either team. Matthews and Biggie Minnis would convert on a couple of free throws and seal a victory for the Rams.

Matthews also pulled down seven rebounds. Teammate Hassan Martin followed up by netting eight points, ten rebounds and seven blocks in the game.
Forward Eric Paschall led Fordham with 19 points and nine rebounds in the loss.
Next up, URI hits the road for a Saturday, January 10 matinee with the Duquesne Dukes. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.

Five Takeaways From the Rams 68-65 Win Over Fordham
T.J. Buchanan
T.J. Buchanan had a great game off the bench for URI. Buchanan netted a season high 12 points on 4 of 7 shooting from the field. He also added two rebounds, two assists and a team leading five steals, all in just 28 minutes of play.
This was only the second game of the season in which Buchanan found himself in double-figures.
Buchanan, one of the senior leaders on this Rams squad, gave URI a huge lift in this one.
Points off turnovers
Fordham turned the ball over 18 times while URI turned the ball over 15 times in the game. However, Fordham converted the Rams turnovers into 22 points while URI only converted for 13 points.
Had the Rams lost this game, points off turnovers would have been a major factor along with free throw shooting.
However, they survived and will have a chance to improve on this in the next game.

The Rams dodged a huge bullet in this game, given the fact that they missed 16 free throws.
URI went 19 of 35 from the the charity stripe for a shooting percentage of 54.
E.C. Matthews was six of ten from the line while Jarvis Garrett was two of six.
Fordham went 13 of 19 from the line.
The free throw shooting needs to improve if the Rams want to continue to win games.
Hassan Martin
Martin didn't lead the Rams in scoring in this game like he has in the previous few games, however he was a major factor against Fordham.
Martin had eight points, pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked a career high SEVEN shots. Martin is now in 6th all-time on the URI career blocks list with 112.
Martin continues his tremendous play and with conference play in full swing, URI needs him to continue.
E.C. Matthews

E.C. Matthews led all scorers with 24 points on 9 of 19 shooting and also grabbed seven rebounds.
The only negative was his team leading five turnovers.
