URI Edges Fordham 68-65, Start 2-0 in A-10 Play

The URI Rams men's basketball team (10-3, 2-0 A-10) opened up the home portion of their conference schedule by edging (5-8, 0-2 A-10) Fordham 68-65 on Wednesday night at The Ryan Center. The Rams have now won five straight games, their longest winning streak since the 2009-10 season.

With the game tied at 64, URI's E.C. Matthews drove to the basket and converted a layup to put URI in front 66-64 with 1:52 left in the game. That Matthews field goald turned out to be the last field goal made by either team. Matthews and Biggie Minnis would convert on a couple of free throws and seal a victory for the Rams.

URI was led by E.C. Matthews who netted 24 points on nine of 19 shooting from the field. Matthews also pulled down seven rebounds. Teammate Hassan Martin followed up by netting eight points, ten rebounds and seven blocks in the game.

Forward Eric Paschall led Fordham with 19 points and nine rebounds in the loss. 

Next up, URI hits the road for a Saturday, January 10 matinee with the Duquesne Dukes. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
