Cherington Steps Down as Red Sox GM, Dombrowski Hired as Pres

The Boston Red Sox have named Dave Dombrowski as President of Baseball Operations. Current Red Sox General Manager Ben Cherington will step down from his position, according to multiple reports. Cherington declined the chance to continue on as the GM but will assist Dombrowski during the transition.

Dave Dombrowski was let go by the Detroit Tigers two weeks ago after a 13 year run as the teams general manager. Dombrowski was let go shortly after trading Tigers sitting at 56-61 and having traded ace David Price. Al Avila was hired as his replacement.

The Tigers made two World Series appearances and two ALCS appearances in Dombrowski's time as General Manager. 

Dombrowski worked for Red Sox owner John Henry when Henry was the owner of the Florida Marlins. 

Ben Cherington 

Ben Cherington took over for Theo Epstein starting in October of 2011 and helped the Red Sox win the  World Series in 2013. However, the Sox went 71-91 in 2014 and this season sit at 52-66, in last place in the AL East. 

The move will be effective immediately. 

Shake up Continues 

The hiring of Dave Dombrowski and the stepping down of Ben Cherington comes just a couple of weeks after Larry Lucchino announced that he was stepping down.  Sam Kennedy will replace Larry Lucchino at the end of the season.
