URI to Face VCU in A-10 Championship Game

The URI Rams will face the VCU Rams in Sunday’s A-10 Championship game with the winner getting the conferences automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. 

“Here we are, where we thought we might have been last year, with a chance to do something great,” said URI head coach Dan Hurley in his post game press conference following the win over Davidson. 

The Rams are in the A-10 title game for the first time since 2007 and face VCU for the second time in about three weeks.

VCU is coming off a 87-77 semifinal win over their rival Richmond in the second semi final game on Saturday afternoon. The VCU Rams will be in their sixth straight A-10 final. 

Game time is set for 12:30 p.m. on CBS. 

URI vs. VCU - Regular Season 

Led by a double-double from Hassan Martin, URI beat VCU 69-59 at the Ryan Center on February 25. 

URI led by as much as 13 points early in the second half before VCU got to within two, 59-57 with 3:29 to play. 

From that point, Jarvis Garrett converted two free throws and E.C. Matthews to push the Rams lead to 63-57 with 2:08 to play. 

The Rams would convert six free throws in the final minute to seal the win.  

How URI Got to Title Game 

The Rams advanced to the title game by beating Davidson 84-60 in the first semifinal game on Saturday. 

Rhode Island shot 49% from the field and 60% from three in the game.  

"This is who we are when we're healthy. We have the ability to be that explosive," Hurley said. 

Leading 20-17 with 10:18 to play in the first half, the Rams got three-pointers from E.C. Matthews, Jared Terrell and Nicola Akele en route to a 13-2 run to take a 33-19 lead with 6:42 to play. 

Davidson would get to within ten, 40-30, with 3:06 to play in the half before Matthews would knock down his fourth three of the half to give the Rams a 43-30 lead with 2:45 to play in the half. 

The Wildcats would get as close as ten points in the half, before URI would push their lead up to 20 points following a Stanford Robinson three.
