Hunter Stewart Wins Northeast Amateur

Hunter Stewart, from Nicholasville, Kentucky, has won the 54th Northeast Amateur Invitational, shooting a ten under par 266 for the tournament and a four under par 65 in the final round on Saturday afternoon at Wannamoisett Country Club. 

Stewart's final round 65 was his lowest round of the tournament after shooting a 69 in the first round and then back to back 66's in rounds two and three. 

Stewart came into the round tied with Michael Johnson at six under and it stayed that way until Johnson played  holes six, seven, eight and nine at two over, while Stewart played them at two under to open a four shot lead heading into the back nine.

After a birdie on ten, Johnson got back within three shots of the lead, however, a double bogey out of the bunker on the par three 12th gave Stewart a commanding five shot lead. 

From there, Stewart sealed the win by dropping in birdies at 13,14 and 15 to get to 11-under par. 

Stewart is from Kentucky and is a member of the Vanderbilt University golf team. 

Notable Finishes 

Kyle Jones from Waco, Texas finished second at six under par while defending champion Stewart Jolly finished in a tie for 11th at even par. 

Rhode Island Competitors 

Meanwhile Newport's John Hayes IV finished the tournament at seven over par, one shot better than Coventry's Bobby Leopold who finished at eight over. 

Providence's Will Dickson and North Providence's Charlie Blanchard did not make the cut.
