PC Beats Cooley and Georgetown, Carter Explodes for 20 Second Half Points

The Providence College men’s basketball team beat Georgetown in Washington, DC, on Tuesday night.

The Friars won 71-58.

The win gave the Friars a season sweep over Ed Cooley and the Hoyas.

PC's Devin Carter, who scored just 4 points in the first half, exploded for 20 In the second half.

Carter finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds.

With the win the Friars move to 19-11 and 10-9 in the Big East. The win ends PC’s two-game losing streak.

Cooley’s Hoyas fall to 9-21 and 2-17 in the conference.

PC led 30-26 at the half, but could not shake Georgetown for much of the second half.

Josh Oduro added 14 points for PC.

FIRST HALF:  

• Jayden Pierre flushed a three from the top of the key to open the scoring for the Friars. The two teams battled back-and-forth headed into the first media timeout (16:00 mark), Providence led by two, 9-7.

• The score remained close throughout the first half. With 9:08 left to play, Georgetown's Jayden Epps converted a free throw to tie the score at 18.

•Providence faced a scoring drought lasting over three minutes long. By the under-8 media timeout (8:00 mark), both teams remained level at 18-18.

•For two minutes following the timeout, neither team managed to score. At the 5:57 mark, Ticket Gaines (Buffalo, N.Y.) ended the Friars' five-minute scoring drought with a textbook layup to give the Friars a two-point edge, 20-18.

•The Friars extended their lead with a 7-0 run. At the final media timeout (3:15 mark) the Friars led, 25-18.

•The Hoyas produced an 8-2 surge to bring the score within one with less than a minute to play. Rich Barron (Chicago, Ill.) flushed a last-second three to give the Friars a four-point cushion leading into halftime.

•Providence shot 13-32 (40.6%) from the field, 4-16 (25.0%) from three, and 0-2 (00.0%) from the free-throw line. 

•Georgetown shot 10-30 (33.3%) from the field, 2-11 (18.2%) from three, and 4-6 (66.7%) from the free-throw line.   

 

SECOND HALF:  

• Carter started off the Friars' second-half scoring with a quick five points. At the first media timeout (15:56 mark), Providence held a 39-31 advantage over Georgetown.

•Led by Carter's 10-point run, the Friars surged ahead to a 13-point lead, the largest margin of the game, making all seven of their field goal attempts. At the 13:30 mark, Oduro recorded a layup to prompt a GU timeout.

•Georgetown answered with an 8-0 run lasting over two minutes. With 9:32 to go, the Hoyas had closed the gap to five, 50-45.

•Both teams struggled offensively, failing to find the net for over two minutes. The Friars held a nine-point advantage leading into the final media timeout (3:56 mark).

•The Friars maintained a comfortable lead for the rest of the half. As the final whistle blew, Providence finished on top, 71-58.

 

HIGHLIGHTS:          

•Providence finished 27-55 (49.1%) from the field, 9-27 (33.3%) from three and 8-11 (72.7%) from the free throw line.    

•Georgetown finished 20-57 (35.1%) from the field, 4-20 (20.0%) from three and 14-19 (73.7%) from the free throw line.  

•Three players finished in double figures for the Friars: Carter (24), Oduro (14), and Barron (11).  

•The Friars outrebounded the Hoyas 30-22.

•Providence outscored Georgetown in points of the bench (17-10), fast-break points (12-4) and points in the paint (34-22).

•Jayden Epps led the way for the Hoyas with 16 points.

•The Hoyas hold a 45-38 all-time series advantage over the Friars.

•Carter scored 20 of his 24 points in the second half.

•Providence improved to 14-1 when leading at halftime.

•This game marked Carter's 30th consecutive game with 10 or more points and his 11th double-double.

•Carter added four steals in the win.

•Freshman Rich Barron added 11 points on 4-7 shooting.

•The Friars are 18-2 when scoring 71 or more points.

•The Friars are 16-1 when outrebounding opponents this season.

•The Friars have posted a 3-1 mark this season against former coaches (2-0 vs. Cooley, 1-1 vs. Pitino).

•The Friars will play their final regular season game at home on Saturday, March 9, against No.2/2 UConn at home. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on FOX.  Friars will honor graduate students Ticket Gaines and Josh Oduro as they play their final home game at the Amp.

•The Huskies hold a 48-31 all-time series advantage over the Friars. In the first meeting this season, the Friars were defeated on the road against UConn, 74-65, on Jan. 31, 2023.
