PC Blows Out DePaul — Moves to 4-0 in Big East

The Friars were led by Devin Carter with a tying career-high 22 points, as well as five steals and four blocks.
With the win, the Friars improved to 12-3 overall and 4-0 in the Big East. The Friars are now tied for first place in the league and it is the first time ever the squad has been 4-0 in the league.

About Game
DePaul shot just 25% from the field in the first half.
Graduate student Jared Bynum added 18 points and four rebounds. Sophomore Bryce Hopkins chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds.
It was a return for Hopkins to his hometown of Chicago.
"When you can win a road game, it gives us some confidence, we've been fortunate to win a couple of games on the road in the league, which are really hard to get," said PC Coach Ed Cooley. "We have to put this behind us and protect home court against, to me, the best team in the country."
FIRST HALF:
- Hopkins knocked down a free throw line jumper for the Friars' opening basket of the game.
- Noah Locke (Baltimore, Md.) and Bynum each nailed a three-pointer to extend an early 10-2 lead resulting in a DePaul timeout with 16:30 left.
- Carter answered a Blue Demon 6-0 run with a layup and a three-point basket to lead 18-10 at the second media timeout.
- The Friars held a 23-15 advantage at the third media timeout.
- Following the timeout, Bynum and Alyn Breed (Powder Springs, Ga.) penetrated the lane and finished right-handed layups, respectively.
- With 4:48 remaining in the half, Breed snagged a Blue Demon pass and located Hopkins for an-and-one layup, to lead 29-17 at the final media timeout of the half.
- Providence saw their largest lead of 16 points in the half following a Carter and-one layup with 2:17 remaining.
- Providence led 38-23 at halftime.
- Providence shot 14-27 (51.9%) from the field, 4-8 (50.0%) from three and 6-12 (50.0%) from the free throw line.
- DePaul shot 7-28 (25.0%) from the field, 2-10 (20.0%) from three and 7-8 (87.5%) from the free throw line.
SECOND HALF:
- Carter opened the scoring with an intercepted pass leading to a slam dunk on the other and followed by a Bynum pull-up jumper and three-pointer to lead 46-29 at the first media timeout.
- At the 14:24 mark, Locke knocked down a right-wing three-pointer to give the Friars a 51-31 lead, forcing a DePaul timeout.
- Providence led 55-35 at the second media timeout.
- With 9:05 remaining, Bynum nailed a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to lead 62-42 at the third media timeout.
- Carter hustled for his fifth steal of the contest tying his career high and found Hopkins for a thunderous alley-oop slam dunk.
- Providence halted a DePaul comeback earning a road conference victory and moving to 4-0 for the first time ever.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Providence finished 24-50 (43.5%) from the field, 7-14 (50.0%) from three and 19-29 (76.5%) from the free throw line.
- DePaul finished 20-57 (44.8%) from the field, 4-19 (22.2%) from three and 15-20 (66.7%) from the free throw line.
- With today's win, it's the first time in program history the Friars start 4-0 in Big East play.
- The Friars forced 19 Blue Demon miscues resulting in 19 points off those turnovers.
- Of Providence's 74 points, 34 of them came in the paint.
- With the victory, the Friars have won seven straight games dating back to December 3.
- The Friars pulled down 38 boards to the Blue Demons' 33 rebounds.
- Three players finished in double figures for the Friars, Carter (22), Bynum (18), and Hopkins (12).
- Da'Sean Nelson led the way for DePaul with 17 points and six rebounds.
- Providence has won 7 of the last 8 meetings versus DePaul.
NEXT:
The Friars will host No. 2/2 University of Connecticut on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at the Amica Mutual Pavillion in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on FS1. UConn lost Saturday against Xavier.
Providence trails 30-45 in the all-time series against UConn. In the lone matchup last year due to COVID-19, Providence earned the 57-53 triumph on December 18 at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut.
