PC Takes Control in Second Half, Beats URI

The Providence men’s basketball team took control in the annual rivalry game, pulling away from the University of Rhode Island in the final ten minutes of the game.

The Friars won 90-71 on Saturday in Providence.

PC improves to 6-4, and URI falls to 7-3.

The final score masks that the game was tied 50-50 at the 15-minute mark of the game.

The Friars may owe the game to the 17-point first half by freshman Stefan Vaaks, who, with the Friars trailing 14-2 in the opening minutes, hit four consecutive 3-pointers to knot the game at 14-14.

The Friars got important contributions from fellow freshman Jamier Jones ,who scored 18 and capped his performance with multiple aerobatic dunks.

And Jaylin Sellers added 14 for the Friars.

PC outshot the Rams 57% to 45% — both teams shot 48% from the 3-point line (14-29.

 

Turnovers Hurt the Rams' Effort

The Rams were led by Jonah Hinton, who scored 23 points but also had six turnovers.

URI had 17 turnovers, most unforced, which led to 23 Friar points.
