RI's Welch 3 Shots Back Entering Round 2 of Junior PGA Championship at Wannamoisett

Providence’s Patrick Welch is three shots back at of Tennessee’s Davis Shore after round one of the Junior PGA Championship at Wannamoisett Country Club. Shore leads the field after shooting a 3-under par 66 in the first round, while Welch shot an even par 69.

The Round

Welch got off to a fast start birding two of the first four holes of his round. Welch shot a 2-under par 32 after his first nine.

On the back nine, he kept it at even through the 14 hole before making a bogey on the par-3 15th hole and then making another bogey on the par-5 17th hole to finish even par for the tournament.

Welch attends Classical High School where he plays varsity basketball and baseball for the Purple.

In the game of golf he had a big 2015.

Welch won the 2015 Drive, Chip and Putt contest at Augusta National and was named the RIGA Junior Player of the Year.

He became the youngest player ever to medal in the Rhode Island State Amateur and won the New England Junior Amateur Champion.

The Leader board

Welch is one of 7 players who are at even par after round one of the tournament.

Ahead of them, three players sit at 1-under, Cole Hammer sits in second by himself at 2-under while Davis Shore, as mentioned above, sits atop the leader board at 3-under.  

Round 2 of the tournament is set to resume today at Wannamoisett with the final round being played on Friday.
