The University of Rhode Island (URI) Men’s Basketball team and Virginia Commonwealth University (URI) entered Tuesday night’s A-10 matchup with 14-4 records. 

In the battle of the “Rams” - a season-high 27 turnovers cost URI in an ugly 81-57 loss to VCU at the Ryan Center in Kingston.

VCU now moves to 5-1 in the A-10, and URI falls to 3-4.

Game Notes 

VCU capitalized off URI’s turnover bonanza, putting up 30 points off the Rams’ errors. VCU also dominated URI with a 38-22 advantage in the paint. 

Despite trailing as much as 18 in the first half, URI's Sebastian Thomas put up five points to pull the Rams within 10 at 33-24. URI then trimmed VCU’s lead to one point on a Jaden House layup before entering halftime down 34-40.

URI got the game within two to start the second half, but VCU exploded to extend its widest margin of the game to 25 points when it went up 79-54.

And in its worst showing this season, URI was 11-for-21 at the free throw line (.524).

Thomas led all URI scorers with 19 points. 

URI’s next game is on the road against La Salle on January 25.
