Thomas Time: Sebastian Hits Winning Shot With 1 Second Left for URI

The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team beat George Mason University 62-59 at the Ryan Center on Saturday.

It was another mega-performance by Rams star Sebastian Thomas.

The Rams are now 12-2 and 1-1 in the A-10. George Mason falls to 10-5, 1-1.

Big Comeback

George Mason led at halftime 34-25, but in the second half, the Rams battled back.

URI tied the game at 54 at the 3:45 mark on a driving layup by Thomas.

The Rams took the lead 56-54 at 2:48 on a Thomas floater.

George Mason star Haynes hit a layup and was fouled with 2:14, but he missed the free throw. The score tied at 56.

Javonte Brown hit a free throw, putting the Rams up one.

The Rams with the ball up 57-56 with under a minute left in the game.  With the shot clock winding down, little-used Quentin Diboundje hit a jumper — putting the Rams up 59-56.

George Mason got the ball with 23 seconds left in the game. Guard Brayden O’Conner hit a running layup, fouled, and hit the free throw. 

The game knotted at 59 all.

 

Thomas Time

Then, it was Thomas time again.

He hit a falling out-of-bounds shot and was fouled with less than one second on the clock. Thomas added a free throw.

Mason missed a three-quarter length shot at the buzzer.

Thomas was the only Ram in double figures with 23 points and added 3 assists and 3 rebounds.

The Rams, as a team, shot just 33% from the field, but Thomas was 8-13.

 

Next

Rhode Island will continue its home stay with a game against George Washington on Wednesday, Jan. 8. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Ryan Center.
