URI Receives $65 Million Gift From Schilling Family

Today, the family substantially increased its donation.
"With gratitude and excitement, URI announces a historic $65M gift from the estate of Helen Izzi Schilling ’54 and her husband, Francis—the largest in University history. This gift establishes the Schilling Scholars Program for students," announced on Friday.

He was a Vice President at General Electric, where, during his career, he was responsible for GE products, including aircraft engines, locomotive engines, and CT scanners. His work frequently took him to Singapore, which he loved, according to his bio.
During his retirement from his career at GE, he founded and directed a successful nuclear cardiology company that produced heart scanning equipment. He died in December of 2020.
Helen was born in Providence, Rhode Island and was the oldest daughter of Mario and Helen Izzi’s four daughters. She graduated from James T. Lockwood High School in the early 1950’s and was accepted at the University of Rhode Island majoring in dietetics and nutrition. While studying at the University of Rhode Island she was president of Kappa Omicron Nu and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, both honor societies. She was also a member of the Alpha Zi Delta sorority.
Helen graduated from the University of Rhode Island. Due to her academic excellence she was granted a full scholarship into a highly competitive and rigorous Master of Science program at The Ohio State University. She graduated with honors and was a life long member of the American Dietetics Association. She was a Registered Dietitian for more than fifty years.
She died in May of 2020.
Now, posthumously, the couple has dedicated more of their wealth to the university.
