URI Football Set to Host Harvard on Saturday

URI hosts Harvard on Saturday
The University of Rhode Island (URI) football team will look to notch their first win of the season on Saturday when they host Ivy League power Harvard at Meade Stadium on the URI campus.

The Rams enter the game with an overall record of 0-2 following last week’s 35-18 loss to Stony Brook.

"I think they are much improved, they have probably the best talent they have had in awhile," said URI radio play-by-play man Steve McDonald.

This will be Harvard’s first game of the season. It is the third straight season in which Harvard has opened against URI.

Kick off is set for 1 p.m.

URI vs Harvard

Saturday’s game will mark the fifth meeting all-time between the two programs with Harvard winning each of the last four.

Harvard has not lost a season opener since 2011, when they lost to Holy Cross.

URI Offense

The Rams will look to get off to a better start in this game as they have not scored a point in the first half yet this season.

Last week against Stony Brook, URI received the opening kickoff and turned it over on their first play from scrimmage.

"In the second half, they are outscoring opponents 39-29 so they have done a great job of getting themselves back in games. The first half it has just been turnovers. They just need to take care of the football early on, not allow early turnovers," said McDonald.

The Rams are led on offense by quarterback Tyler Harris, who last week went 15 of 32 for 185 yards and a touchdown, but threw two interceptions.

A big target for Harris so far this season has been sophomore wide receiver Aaron Parker, who has at least one touchdown catch in four straight games. Last week, his touchdown catch came on a 63-yard pass from Harris.

Senior running back Harold Cooper enters the game needing just 26 rushing yard to crack URI’s top 10 all-time leaders in rushing. Cooper currently has 1,769 yards and trails Shyron Sanford, who posted 1,795 yards from 1995-1998.

On the season, URI’s offense has averaged 22 points and 378 yards of total offense per game.

URI Defense

The Rams defense is second in the league in takeaways with six behind on Maine, who has 10.

URI’s five fumble recoveries are the most in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The Rams only had six fumble recoveries in 11 games last season.

"Their defense has been able to play good situational defense, especially in Central Michigan game," said McDonald.

Leading the way in forcing turnovers has been sophomore Myles Ross.

Ross forced a fumble against Stony Brook and had an interception against Central Michigan.

On the season, URI’s defense has given up an average of 32 points and 400 total yards per game.

McDonald added, "I think the results defensively will be better and better as the season goes on. I think they are going to have a good year in CAA, they can compete with anyone in that league."
