Raimondo & Mattiello Receive Outstanding Achievement Award from Tax Foundation

Speaker Nicholas Mattiello and Governor Gina Raimondo receive awards from the Tax Foundation
Governor Gina Raimondo and Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello will receive awards for Outstanding Achievement in State Tax Reform from the Tax Foundation.

“Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo (D) and Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello (D) not only saved money for Rhode Island taxpayers but also made the state’s tax code more efficient. These reforms are indicative of a thoughtful approach to enact policies that benefit businesses and individuals in Rhode Island,” said Tax Foundation Policy Analyst Katherine Loughead.

They will accept the awards at the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council’s 75th Annual Meeting on Monday, October 1 at the Rhode Island Convention Center.

Mattiello and Raimondo's Awards

About Raimondo and Mattiello, the Tax Foundation wrote:

“As part of her fiscal year 2017 budget, Raimondo proposed changes to the unemployment insurance (UI) tax paid by employers and lowered the amount the trust fund is required to hold in reserve. These changes were instrumental in helping the state move from the most poorly structured UI tax system in the country to its current rank of 29th on the Tax Foundation's State Business Tax Climate Index.

Speaker Mattiello in the fiscal year 2018 budget helped enact legislation that will gradually phase out the burdensome and antiquated motor vehicle excise tax. Prior to Speaker Mattiello’s reforms, a 2017 study by WalletHub found that Rhode Island’s motor vehicle tax was the highest in the country.”

The Award

The Tax Foundation selects honorees each year “who accomplished extraordinary work to advance the cause of simpler, smarter tax policy.”

Past honorees include four governors, legislators from eight states, the Presidents of the Nevada Taxpayers Association and the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council, vigilant Utah tax officials who uncovered nationwide tax filing fraud, and a taxpayer activist in Ohio.
