Smart Benefits: Current Form I-9 Valid Until January 21

Federal law requires every employer to complete and retain a Form I-9 for every person hired after November 6, 1986, to verify an employee’s identify and authorization to work in the United States.

The current version of Form I-9 expired on March 31, 2016. In August, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) approved a revised Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. While the publication date of the new form is still unknown, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services must publish it by November 22, 2016. The expiration date of the new form will be August 31, 2019.

Employers may continue using the current version of Form I-9 with a revision date of 03/08/2013 N, until January 21, 2017. After January 21, 2017, all previous versions of the form will be invalid.
