United Way of RI Names Bannerman Ankoma Executive VP, Director of Community Investment

United Way of Rhode Island (UWRI) has announced the hiring of Angela Bannerman Ankoma as Executive Vice President, Director of Community Investment.

They have also announced the promotion of Mary Benvenuto to Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer.

Bannerman Ankoma comes to UWRI from the RI Department of Health (RIDOH), where she served as Co-Director of the Health Equity Institute and oversaw the implementation of RIDOH’s priorities on health equity and social and environmental determinants of health. While there, she was the Principal Investigator for two federally funded Office of Minority Health initiatives; the Princes to Kings Youth Mentorship Initiative and RI-Girls Empowerment and Mentorship Support.

In her new role, Bannerman Ankoma is responsible for leading UWRI’s community investment work and managing the organization’s strategic direction to address and solve community needs through its grant-making and community investment processes. She is also in charge of overseeing UWRI’s public policy work and developing a portfolio of policy items at both the state and federal levels in accordance with UWRI’s strategic objectives.

Bannerman Ankoma serves as Chair of the West Elmwood Housing Development Corporation (WEHDC) and is one of the founding members of WEHDC’s nationally recognized Sankofa Initiative.

She holds a Master of Social Work and Master of Public Health degrees from Columbia University, and lives in Providence with her husband and their four children.

About Benvenuto

Mary Benvenuto
Benvenuto has been promoted to Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, having previously served as UWRI’s Controller since joining the organization in late 2015.

Prior to joining UWRI, Benvenuto oversaw Financial Reporting and International Accounting for an award-winning IT solution provider with national U.S. coverage and global distribution.

As Chief Financial Officer, Benvenuto is responsible for the development of financial strategy and the ongoing development and monitoring of control systems designed to preserve company assets and report accurate financial results.

In addition to Finance, Benvenuto is in charge of overseeing UWRI’s Information Technology and Facilities Management.

She serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Blackstone Valley Boys and Girls Club, and a member of the Blackstone-Millville School District Strategic Planning Sub-Committee.

Benvenuto holds a Master of Science in Accounting from Nichols College and a B.S. in Accounting from Bryant University. She lives in Blackstone, MA, with her husband and two children.
