First Female Rhode Island State Police Superintendent to be Named

The state's first female State Superintendent will be named on Thursday, GoLocal has learned. 

According to State House sources and first reported by WPRI.com, Rhode Island State Police Captain Ann Assumpico -- a twenty-four year veteran of the force who currently serves as Director of Training -- will be the new Superintendent of the State Police. 

"It's not official yet  -- I won't comment until it's official, it wouldn't be appropriate," said former Rhode Island State Police Superintendent Colonel Steve O'Donnell when reached for comment on Wednesday.

Assumpico would be the 13th Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police in its 91 year history.

About Assumpico

Captain Assumpico is a twenty-four (24) year veteran of the Rhode Island State Police and serves as the Director of Training for the Rhode Island State Police and the Department of Public Safety. Captain Assumpico is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Rhode Island State Police Training Academy and the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy.

Captain Assumpico has served at all of the barracks as a member of the Patrol Bureau. She was a member of the Honor Guard Unit and Night Executive Officer, as well as a former Defensive Tactics Instructor, Firearms Instructor, Field Training officer, Domestic Violence Instructor and Peer Counselor. For the past 9 years she served in the Planning, Research & Accreditation Unit, most recently as the Unit’s Officer-in-Charge.

Prior to joining the Rhode Island State Police, Captain Assumpico served eight (8) years as a Correctional Officer and as the Adult Correctional Institute (ACI)/Academy Self Defense Instructor. She was also a member of the ACI Tactical Team and held the rank of Assistant Squad Leader and was a member of their Extraction Team.

Captain Assumpico also served seven (7) years as a Police Officer for the Town of Coventry where she was a member of the SWAT Team. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Roger Williams University and a Master of Science Degree in Administration of Justice from Salve Regina University. She previously served as an Adjunct Faculty Member of Salve Regina University.
