About Incident
Shortly before 2 AM Saturday morning, police on detail monitoring off-campus activities at Pembroke Avenue near Providence College said they saw a fight breaking out between over a dozen people.
According to police, multiple individuals flagged police down, at which time police said they observed a suspect — later identified by police as Cole Derico, a Johnson & Wales student, age 21 — wearing a "SWAT" costume and fighting with another student at the party.
Police say that when they arrived and attempted to break up the altercation, Dirico began to fight with the responding officer and then attempted to choke the officer.
Multiple individuals told police that Dirico had been denied entrance to the party, and that he had then assaulted multiple individuals — who told police they wished to press charges.
One of the victims included a female student who had attempted to break up the fighting.
Providence police said all of the units responded to assist with the disturbance and dispersal of approximately 50 to 70 people loitering in the road and sidewalks.
Dirico was transported to Central Station and held until the next session of 6th District Court, where he is facing charges of simple assault, assault on a police office, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
According to police, two other individuals were also arrested for disorderly conduct and obstruction of an officer in the execution of duty.
Those individuals were Jean Maruri, age 20, and Jonathan Hernandez, age 22.
