DCYF: One Child Dead and Two Near Fatalities in Recent Months
On Wednesday, the Department of Children, Youth & Families (DCYF) disclosed the near fatality of a 2-year-old child.
DCYF said that "an investigation has determined that this near fatality resulted from maltreatment. The child and the family were not open to the Department at the time of this incident."

This is the third incident announced by DCYF in the last ten days.
A week ago Monday, DCYF announced that an infant recently died in the state.
In addition, it announced a "near fatality" of a 10-year-old in 2024.
It is unclear why the 2024 incident is only being disclosed now.
Statement by DCYF in April
DCYF released the following statement on April 29:
"Pursuant to Rhode Island General Law § 42-72-8(c), the Department of Children, Youth & Families (DCYF) is disclosing the fatality of a 3-month-old infant. The child and family were open to the Department at the time of the incident.
The incident occurred on April 25, 2025, and DCYF has notified the Office of Child Advocate.
Additionally, pursuant to CAPTA amendment 42 U.S.C. § 106 (b)(2)(B)(x), DCYF is disclosing the near fatality of a 10-year-old child. The incident occurred on July 31, 2024.
The Department confirmed at a later date that this case was the subject of maltreatment findings and met the criteria of a near fatality."
In addition, DCYF released the following statement:
