EDITORIAL: PawSox Owners Ask is Failed Community Leadership and Ultimate Greed

Remember when successful business leaders would use their wealth and later years to build libraries, fund scholarships and invest in non-profits?

Now, a group of New England’s wealthiest and most successful businessmen are hustling state taxpayer funds and asking Pawtucket, Rhode Island to float a bond to pay for their personal play toy.

That is right, the men who built mega-billion corporations and walked away with billions in personal wealth, knowingly bought a minor league baseball team and have been threatening, berating and cajoling Rhode Islanders to underwrite the cost of their pet sports interest. Most of these men have left the state to move to Florida to avoid paying Rhode Island taxes.

They bought the team for less than $30 million and are now asking for subsidies of $38 million. Now we know why these guys are billionaires.

Kudos to them for building great companies, tip of the hat for creating jobs, but it is just embarrassing that these men are asking for a handout for a minor league team from cash-strapped Pawtucket residents and Rhode Islanders.

To quote Rhode Island business leader Angus Davis’ Tweet, “R.I. facing $100 mm rev shortfall, pensions underfunded, schools cut, taxes high. But hey, let's toss $38 mm to new PawSox ballpark. AYFKM?”

Davis is one of the states most successful entrepreneurs. He lives here, is building a business here, and even pays taxes in Rhode Island.

Absurd

Terry Murray and Tom Ryan asking Pawtucket to float a bond is like Daddy Warbucks shaking down Annie and Sandy for some cash. It is cartoonesque.

To elected officials, economic development is good. And construction jobs are good. But twenty full time jobs, most under $40,000, is not economic development.

If the owners of the PawSox are community leaders — they will build a stadium and create a great community asset for families to enjoy. Rhode Islanders would embrace it. This ask is just embarrassing.
