EXCLUSIVE: Major Music Promoter Eyeing 195 Stadium Land in Providence

Coran Capshaw, who was behind the Charlottesville Pavilion pictured here, is reported to be eyeing the 195 stadium parcel in Providence.
The Pawtucket Red Sox could have some competition in the pursuit of the proposed parcel of 195 land for a new stadium.

Coran Capshaw Red Light management is said to be eyeing Providence's riverfront opportunities for a mid-size outdoor concert venue, according to multiple sources -- and is slated to be making an announcement regarding interest in the land shortly, which is projected to be just where the PawSox have been looking.

Red Light Founder Robert Coran Capshaw, who manages such musical acts at Dave Matthews Band and Lady Antebellum, has an extensive background of music venue development nationally.

Capshaw was behind the creation of Charlottesville Pavilion in 2005, a $3.5 million joint endeavor between the North Carolina city and Capshaw, which opened on the downtown mall. The pavilion serves multiple uses in the community including hosting the Fridays After Five free concert series. Since opening the Pavilion has been renamed the nTelos Wireless Pavilion

According to reports:

The city lent Capshaw $2.4 million to build the pavilion, contributed another $1 million, and demands that he operate the place for 20 years with at least 10 days a year for city-sponsored events, according to the lease.

Capshaw also owns the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville.

C-Ville dubbed Capshaw in 2012 as one of "Development's Top Players" for the city:

The projected PawSox stadium on 195 land could be facing competition at the current location.
A self-made man who got to the very top from very near the bottom, some people around town still remember when he sold firewood to homeowners at Wintergreen. Famous for his love of privacy and for holding all the strings in a business empire that stretches to every corner of the country, Capshaw touches all aspects of our town.

The proud subject of a well-populated Wikipedia page could have shown up on at least three of our power lists in this issue, but we chose to put him in the real estate section, as he’s the man behind a huge residential condominium complex, City Walk, which is poised to rise just down the railroad tracks from the nTelos Wireless Pavilion, which he developed in partnership with the city.

John Taraborelli with Tabs & Robin, the newly formed public relations and promotion shop in Providence reported to be working with Capshaw, said he was "not able to comment" on anything at this time.
