LA Police Shoot and Kill Rhode Island Man Wearing Body Armor

LAPD issued a statement on the shooting.
Los Angeles Police shot and killed a Rhode Island man on Saturday.

According to police, the man reversed his vehicle into a police cruiser -- and exited his car wearing body armor. 

"The man who was shot and killed by the Los Angeles Police Department in Hollywood Saturday has been identified, and may have had previous run-ins with law enforcement before coming to the Los Angeles area," reported NBC 4

"The coroner's office has identified the man killed on Sunset and Fairfax as 34-year-old Richard Solitro," NBC 4 continued, who said they "reached out to family members of Solito’s in Rhode Island and talked to his mother, who asked for privacy at this time."

In 2018, a Richard Solitro was shot by North Providence Police, who were responding to a report of a domestic mental health disturbance. NP Police had stated Solitro appeared to be brandishing a weapon. 

North Providence Police did not respond to request for comment at time of publication. 

LAPD's Statment

LAPD posted the following information about the incident on Saturday on its Facebook page:

There has been an Officer-Involved Shooting on Sunset Bl near Fairfax in Hollywood Division. Around 2:35 p.m. ofcrs were heading to a radio call w/ their lights & sirens on when a car pulled in front of them, stopped suddenly & reversed into the police car.

The driver of the car exited, was wearing body armor, & had his right hand concealed behind him. He moved toward the ofcrs who had exited their patrol car. He counted "3, 2, 1" & began to move his arm to the front of his body, at which time there was an OIS.

The man was struck by gunfire & pronounced deceased at scene. Force Investigation Div detectives are on scene conducting interviews & gathering evidence.
