NEW: 71 New Coronavirus Cases in Rhode Island, Total Nears 18,000

The Rhode Island Department of Health announced 71 new coronavirus cases in the state on Friday.

The total number of positive cases is now 17,793, with 62 people currently hospitalized — 4 are in ICU and 2 on ventilators.

Rhode Island’s case numbers have been increasing since the July 3 low of 23.

There were 2 additional fatalities, bringing the state’s total COVID-19 related deaths to 990. 

The three-day average of people hospitalized is 62. 

Corona Impacting Nursing Homes

As GoLocal reported, the nursing home industry in Rhode Island is in chaos - coronavirus deaths, financial instability, labor conflict, and, now, suffering from an unstable state testing system that may cause a second wave of infection.

In just the past three months, one nursing home has announced its closure and another has gone into receivership and come out as well.

Nursing homes have been ground zero for the coronavirus infections and deaths — approximately 80 percent of the nearly 1,000 deaths from the virus in Rhode Island are linked to nursing homes. Rhode Island ranks 5th in the United States for the number of coronavirus deaths per 100,000 residents.
