The City of East Providence, which was originally supposed to hold its fireworks celebration on July 3, canceled its "rain date" celebration on Sunday.

Around 2 PM, East Providence shared the following message on social media:

The rain date originally scheduled for today, Sunday, July 6th will not be happening tonight.

Unfortunately, we did not cancel the July 3rd fireworks event in time to salvage the rain date.

The vendor had set and loaded all of the fireworks for the July 3rd show and had to discharge them for safety.

Our team continually monitored the forecast for the storm on July 3rd. The severity of the storm and damage caused by the storm was unlike anything we have seen before.

The severity of this storm was not anticipated by anyone.

Our sincere apologies. We look forward to a spectacular show next year as we celebrate 250 years of independence. Thank you and stay well.
