Woman Shot in Back in Providence, Police Find 20 Shell Casings by Vehicle

Providence police responded to reports of shots fired off Plainfield Street early Sunday morning.

A woman who was shot in the back went to Women and Infants Hospital -- and police found 20 shell casings at the scene.

Shortly after 1 AM Sunday morning, police were dispatched to 24 Alverson Avenue for a report of shots fired. Police were also receiving multiple calls within the adjacent area of Eastwood Avenue and Merino Street for shots fired -- approximately 15 shots were heard. 

Police started to canvass the area when they were advised that a female had been shot via an update from the fire departmemt.

Police then observed there to be a crowd gathering in the area of 240 Eastwood Avenue.

Upon arriving, police were told by witnesses on scene that there had been a shooting, although no one on scene was shot at the time. Police then were advised that a female shooting victim had arrived at Woman and Infants hospital by her own means. 

According to police, she sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the back.

As police controlled the crowd forming, officers located a scene in front of 247 Eastwood Avenue. Across the street was a vehicle which police observed to have several bullet holes that spanned from the front right of the vehicle to the rear.
