A Providence police officer was assaulted early Sunday morning in downtown Providence.

According to police, a group of intoxicated males became belligerent toward officers and threatened to fight them before a physical altercation ensued and multiple arrests were made.

The incident took place following PVDFest on Saturday, which allowed open containers of alcohol to be consumed in public throughout the day and into the evening.

Providence police say they were directing traffic at the intersection of Washington Street and Mathewson Street shortly before 3 AM Sunday morning, when they saw three men walking on Washington Street.

According to police, one of the men picked up ice that had been left in the street and tossed it in the air.

Police said they told the man — later identified as Christian Brandon, age 27 — to leave the ice alone as it nearly hit a motorcyclist going by and could have caused an accident.

The two other men, later identified as George Carl, age 31, and Joshua Brandon, age 28, then approached an officer, who said he detected “a strong order of alcoholic beverages” coming from the men, according to police.

At this time, police said Carl told officers he was not pleased with the way his friend was being spoken to and told police “he was in the Army.”

Police said a crowd began to gather, and refused orders to disperse. Police said Christian Brandon took off his shirt and assumed a fighting stance.

As police went to detain Christian Brandon, they said both Carl and Joshua Brandon physically tried to interfere.

Police said that as they attempted to detain Carl, Christian Brandon broke free and jumped on an officer’s back and choked him until he was pulled off by additional units on the scene.

Carl, Joshua Brandon and Christian Brandon were all eventually placed into locked handcuffs and transported to Central Station without further incident, according to police.

Carl and Joshua Brandon are both being charged with one count (each) of Disorderly Conduct, resisting legal or illegal arrest and Obstructing an Officer in Execution of Duty. They will both be held for the next session of Sixth District Court.

Christian Brandon is also being held and had been turned over to detectives for further charging.
