Blackstone Boulevard Traffic Stop Leads to Police Chase -- and Loaded Gun Found

Providence Police say that an attempted traffic stop of a speeding driver on Blackstone Boulevard Wednesday night resulted in the suspect speeding off — and vehicle occupants ultimately stopped and detained in Pawtucket. 

According to police, a loaded weapon was found along the route the driver took with “fresh scrape marks” from hitting the pavement.

About Incident

Shortly before 10 PM Wednesday night, police were on patrol when they said they observed a vehicle with heavily tinted windows speeding on Blackstone Boulevard at Rochambeau Avenue toward Pawtucket. 

Police said they attempted to conduct a traffic stop at the end of Blackstone Boulevard — at which time they said the vehicle took off toward Pawtucket. 

According to police, the vehicle continued at a high rate of speed on East Avenue with police in pursuit.

The vehicle finally came to a stop on Pleasant Street at which point police ordered the occupants of the vehicle to step outside. 

Police removed the driver identified as James Rudder, age 21, along with two passengers, and placed them all in custody. 

Investigators traced the path the vehicle had taken and said they found a loaded .9mm with significant damage on the barrel of along with fresh scrape marks from the pavement. 

According to police, through prior training and experience, these are common signs of a firearm being thrown from a moving vehicle. 

Detectives are currently investigating.
