Raimondo Calls Transition Policy Summit "Beginning of Conversation" for RI

RI Govenor-elect Gina Raimondo addresses summit attendees on Tuesday.
Rhode Island Governor-elect Gina Raimondo's transition policy summit Tuesday night at the University of Rhode Island auditorium on Washington Street in Providence brought in 'thought leaders' from throughout the state -- and workforce development was a common theme among attendees.

The names of the 80 Rhode Islanders scheduled to attend were previously not released by the Raimondo camp, but become known on Tuesday evening.

"I'm part of the segment on workforce development," said Providence resident, former candidate for State Senate, and head of education reform group RI-CAN Maryellen Butke, who currently is an education consultant. "Focusing on the ties between K-12 and higher education...I'm just excited to be here, and see what we can do there."

"My suggestion is that as people of color represent 25% of the state, that has to be a factor of any economic plan," said NAACP Providence Branch President Jim Vincent. "The law says that 10% of all state contracts and procurement go to people of color.  That hasn't happened, and that needs to happen."

Raimondo invited a cross-section of political ideologies amongst state leaders.

"Most of our problems are ones that can be solved," said Rhode Island Senate Minority Leader, Republican Dennis Algiere. "[Raimondo] has brought a diverse group of people together, to put the data together and start getting the state in the right direction. I'm very optimistic about the future."

Raimondo addressed the summit invitees prior to turning to working groups.

"This a continuation of what I started a year ago, with dozens of round tables, and hundreds of house parties to start to take action," said Raimondo. "You're on the front lines of Rhode, you have the answers...we're on this journey together."

While the evening consisted of breakout groups, the Governor-elect took the opportunity to speak to the other major development of the day -- announcing her nominee for the state's first Commerce Secretary, Stefan Pryor.

"I chose him for his track record of getting this done," said Raimondo. "I wanted to make the announcement, then immediately put him to work."

Pryor said that he believes that Rhode Island is "positioned for success."

"We will be implementing ideas from the 'outside,' but many of the ideas are right here in our midst. I want to hear what the practitioners believe," said Pryor.
