RI Jumps to 3rd Highest Coronavirus Death Rate Per Capita, 50% Higher Than U.S. Average

Never before has Rhode Island been ranked so high for deaths related to the coronavirus since the pandemic began.
Most recently, Rhode Island passed Massachusetts after the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) on Monday unveiled previously unreported deaths.

New Jersey leads the country at 2,575 per one million residents followed by New York at 2,423, and Rhode Island at 2,328. The United States average is 1,549 per million.
State officials’ explanation of why the deaths are being reported weeks and months late raises more questions about the agency’s data management and reporting.
According to RIDOH, “Our death data are considered provisional for at least three months, and are often adjusted upward. This is because it takes time for causes of death to be confirmed, and for us to cross reference our different data sets. We routinely do reviews to cross reference our case data and our overall fatality data to ensure that all COVID-19 fatalities are captured."
"This often results in us identifying COVID-19 fatalities that were not initially reported to RIDOH as COVID-19 fatalities. We did one of these routine reviews, which is why there was a larger than usual increase in today’s cumulative total of COVID-19 fatalities," the agency added.
But never before has so much data been changed. Some of the revised data reverts all the way back to June of 2020.
Of the 81 newly reported coronavirus death 67 of them were 80 years old or older.
