The Rhode Island Philharmonic has said that their status for this year's 4th of July celebration at India Point Park in Providence is in doubt, given the revelation that the title funder from the last five years has pulled out.

BankRI confirmed with GoLocal on Tuesday that it will no longer be the title sponsor of the City of Providence's 4th of July celebration, which it has headlined as the "BankRI Independence Day Celebration" since 2010.

"I think it's doubtful -- I think it's a matter of funding, we've been trying to round up support and get something going on," said Rhode Island Philharmonic Director and Artistic Administrator David Gasper.  "We'll have make a decision in the next few days, but that mostly rests with the city."

The City of Providence is gearing up for its now second annual arts --  PVDFest -- this coming weekend.

"We don't have a title sponsor at this time, and we do not know the status of [the Pops]," said Evan England, spokesperson for Providence Mayor Elorza on Tuesday, of the 4th of July celebration.

Look out, Bristol. With the financial support of Bank RI, Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline has announced a series of family-fun festivities that will make Providence a patriotic hotspot on 4th of July weekend. The BankRI Independence Weekend: Celebration will be free, open to the public, and will include fireworks and live music performances by the Rhode Island Philharmonic Pops Program and United States Army Band and Chorus.

Last year, in his first year in office, Elorza touted the event as a highlight of the summer for Providence.

“The BankRI Independence Day Celebration is a highlight of the summer season in our Creative Capital,” said Elorza last year. “I look forward to joining visitors and residents at India Point Park to celebrate the Fourth of July with a free concert from the Rhode Island Philharmonic Pops Orchestra and our signature fireworks display.”

BankRI's President and CEO Mark J. Meiklejohn told GoLocal of their decision on Tuesday.

“BankRI is proud of our long-time commitment to the City of Providence’s annual 4th of July Celebration and the opportunity to celebrate one of our country’s most important holidays alongside our fellow Rhode Islanders,” said Meiklejohn. “After years of sponsoring this family-friendly event, and much consideration, we made the decision to step back this year, creating an opportunity for other Rhode Island businesses to become more involved in this great event as sponsors.”
