RI State Police Offer Safety Tips for Drivers During July 4 Holiday

With the July 4 holiday approaching, the Rhode Island State Police are encouraging Rhode Islanders to drive safely.

According to Colonel James Manni, additional troopers have been assigned throughout this weekend, and on the Fourth of July holiday, to enforce all motor vehicle laws.

The RI State Police add that troopers also will be vigilant in their enforcement of other motor vehicle violations, including speeding, aggressive driving, and distracted driving.

The RI State Police offer the following tips:

  • Don't drink and drive. If your heading to a cookout or other holiday event, arrange for a safe ride home ahead of time.
  • Buckle up. Drivers and passengers should wear seatbelts at all times, and children should be properly secured in a child safety seat.
  • Avoid distractions. Rhode Island now prohibits the use of handheld cell phones and other devices, and it also is illegal to text and drive.  Set up your mapping app before you start your car. Pay attention to the road and other motorists at all times.
  • Allow extra time.  More motorists are expected to travel this weekend and, on the holiday, So allow extra time to get to your destination and avoid driving peak travel periods when possible.
  • Stay alert. Drowsy driving can be as dangerous as drunk driving. Make sure you are well rested before heading out.
